Residents in Marion County can join communities around the country this week to celebrate Drinking Water Week (May 5-11, 2024).
Led by the American Water Works Association, Drinking Water Week serves to highlight the importance of safe drinking water and recognize the tireless efforts of water professionals who keep it flowing around the clock in our communities.
In addition to the water professionals who maintain our drinking water systems, businesses and individuals play a crucial role in keeping drinking water safe. Organizations who conduct business in one of the 7 Wellfield Protection Areas in Marion County are required to comply with local and federal regulations to protect drinking water. Local residents can help by disposing of household chemicals properly, using fertilizer only as directed or filling up cars in gas stations outside of wellfield protection areas.
How does clean water get from the ground, a river, or lake to your house?
In Marion County, water professionals work around the clock to maintain the infrastructure that is required to carry drinking water from 72 wells to treatment plants and then homes, businesses and critical infrastructure such as hospitals. Check out this printable maze that shows how water flows from the earth to our home and back! (Note: groundwater is not shown as a source of drinking water, but Marion County, Indiana does utilize groundwater in this same process).
You can also celebrate drinking water week by finding new ways to use your water efficiently or participating in a local river clean through the RAFT or Hoosier Riverwatch programs.
If you are a business located in a Marion County Wellfield Protection Area, contact us to schedule a free, confidential assessment of your facility’s procedures and groundwater protection plans.
Groundwater is our drinking water – let’s protect it!
