Who’s in Our Wellfields? Trader’s Point Creamery

August 2, 2017

As part of our “Who’s in Our Wellfields?” series, we would like to show you another one of Indianapolis’ cool places that happen to be located within a wellfield!

Trader’s Point Creamery is located in the Ford Wellfield within Zionsville. The Ford Wellfield is one of Indianapolis’ two wellfields that stretch into other counties. Trader’s Point Creamery is an organic dairy farm that has a great farm-to-table restaurant.

Trader’s Point Creamery is a great asset to the wellfield. Organic farming is generally very friendly to groundwater protection because fewer chemicals are used. Additionally, farmland and pasture is very conducive for groundwater recharge. When there are large permeable surfaces (like grass or permeable pavement), the rain water can seep down from the surface and recharge the aquifers that we collect our drinking water from. In other locations in the city, most of the land is covered with impermeable surfaces like concrete or asphalt, so when it rains the rainwater is immediately discharged by our storm water system into surface water like the White River or Fall Creek and the aquifers can’t be recharged.

If you have a chance, check Trader’s Point Creamery out! While you are out there, take a moment to think about the water underneath your feet.

Stay tuned for more posts in our “Who’s in Our Wellfields?” series and learn more about the businesses that make up our wellfields. If you missed our previous post about Ft. Harrison State Park, you can check it out here.
