Using the Awesome Aquifer Kit from the National Groundwater Association (NGWA), teachers can easily bring groundwater water education directly to the classroom!
The kit, designed for grades K-12 is a hands on way to see what happens to our groundwater. Teachers can dive into each topic with short preparatory videos on the possible lessons to cover with the kit.
Subjects covered include:
- Groundwater and Surface Water: How are these two connected? Dive into concepts such as the water table, aquifers, groundwater recharge, runoff, and infiltration.
- Pumping the Supply: How do wells mechanically work? How does water withdrawal and recharge impact water supply?
- Porosity: How well do different substances hold water?
- Permeability: Why does water flow at different speeds? Students will learn how to calculate flow rate though different materials.
- Water Contamination: How does groundwater become polluted? Learn about different types of contamination and why are monitoring wells important.
- Clean it up: How do we clean up water that has been contaminated? What is remediation?
Physical kits also include full lesson plans and 2 posters featuring the water cycle and US aquifers.
