In Marion County, Indiana, we have a very active Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) that assists land users in conserving soil, water, and related natural resources. Throughout the year the Marion County SWCD works with neighborhoods and individuals to host project and workshops that improve our water quality.
Each county in the state also has a SWCD. These districts are local government units that collaborate with various local, regional, and state government bodies, private nonprofits, and educational institutions to offer conservation services to private landowners. The SWCDs are very passionate about land stewardship, soil health and water quality and count on the work of hundreds of volunteers each year. Districts receive funding from various sources including Clean Water Indiana and provide educational services, technical assistance and cost-sharing programs.
The Marion County SWCD just released their 2025 annual report which details many of the great programs available. Some highlights from their water projects include:
- Rain garden planting at Indy Urban Acres
- Stream Stewards workshops teaching riparian owners about proper conservation
- New projects in the Lower Fall Creek Watershed Management Plan
- Individual assistance for reviewing homeowner drainage plans and issues
In addition, the district has received several awards including the Purdue Extension-Marion County 2025 Friend of Extension Award for partners who unwaveringly help provide practical solutions to local issues.
