While flushing a Christmas tree down the drain is pretty unlikely, there are plenty of other ways your toilet and sink might receive some unwanted items this holiday season.
Both you and your guests might be tempted to flush and run – whether its back to the party or being in a hurry to let the next guest in the bathroom or to the sink. Be a conscious host and provide signs and clearly labeled waste containers. Here are a few tips!
- Don’t leave out disposable items such as disinfecting or baby wipes. Keeping fresh towels or a neat pile of labeled, colorful rags will help your guests understand there are other ways to cleanup small spills or wipe counters.
- Put in a larger trash receptable in the bathroom. Your normal small container might get full fast, leaving guests tempted to flush instead of put in the overflowing can.
- Put a grease collection container with a sign near your sink if you have other people helping prepare food.
- Clearly label your recycling and trash containers in the kitchen. You may know which is trash and which is recycling but your guests might not!
- If you are a business or homeowner located in a Marion County Drinking Water Protection Area (also known as a wellfield), post this sign in your bathroom and by any other sinks.
- If you are not in a wellfield, you can make a general sign for the bathroom or use the bathroom sign below to alert guests that only paper and human waste go down the toilet.
Remember our drains are not trash cans! The more we put down them, the harder both homeowners and utilities have to work to keep drains clear and to treat contaminated drinking water. Let’s all work together this holiday season to keep our parties and water supply running smoothly.
