It may be hard to imagine litter in your neighborhood ending up in a waterway if you are far from a water source. But dropped or unsecured pieces of trash can easily travel if not contained. Rain and wind carry trash into storm drains, streams, canals, and rivers. Trash in our stormwater system not only creates more cost for water system cleanup, but impacts our ecosystems as it travels through the environment.
This Earth Day, do something positive to reduce the trash in your neighborhood. Head out on your own, or think about working with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (Kibi) to organize a Great Indy Cleanup in your neighborhood. When you sign up, your group will be provided with a dumpster, trash bags, and gloves for your community cleanup (litter grabbers and reflective vests can also be borrowed).
This program, done in partnership with the City of Indianapolis, is both an anti-litter campaign as well as a community building and empowerment program. Kibi will help neighborhoods with publicity and tips for running the event.
Dumpsters are allocated on a first come, first serve basis April – October, so make sure to reach out to apply with Kibi as soon as you get neighborhood approval.
Remember – water in our community is our drinking water – let’s protect it!
