Should you have a chemical spill in your place of business, it is critical to take action right away to protect human health and also prevent contamination of our drinking water resources. If you are located in a drinking water protection area (wellfield) in Marion County, IN, you are required to maintain and train your employees on your Emergency Response / Spill Prevention Plan. This plan will detail what kind of response is needed and who should be contacted and/or notified.
Your on-site spill kit that may be sufficient to manage your spill (see also Is it a spill or is it a release?). But what if you need to call in help? The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) maintains a Spill Contractor Map that can be useful in locating spill response help.
Contractors on this map have been certified as specialists in spill response and maintain 24-hour, 7 days a week, 365 days a year response capabilities. They must have properly trained and certified employees who will work in accordance with local, state and federal safety and environmental laws and regulation and have the ability to document spill response efforts and assemble a written spill report.
You should use this map to pre-select a contractor and add their information to your Emergency Response / Spill Prevention Plan. In the event of an active spill, you will be able to quickly locate their information in your plan.
