The Awesome Aquifer Kit from the National Groundwater Association (NGWA) is a hands on way to see what happens to our groundwater.
Oklahoma State and the NGWA have recently teamed up to launch a 100% digital version of the popular physical kit – the Awesome Aquifer 360. Using the digital access, students in grades 5-8 are able to explore the same important concepts as with the physical model. Some of these lessons include:
- Groundwater and Surface Water: How are these two connected? Dive into concepts such as the water table, aquifers, groundwater recharge, runoff, and infiltration.
- Permeability: Why does water flow at different speeds? Students will learn how to calculate flow rate though different materials.
- Water Contamination: How does groundwater become polluted? Learn about different types of contamination and why are monitoring wells important.
Included in each $300 digital subscription is 1 year access for up to 3 teachers as well as educational videos and instructional tutorials. Scholarships for your classrooms are available through the Oklahoma State University website.
Also consider the physical kit! Physical kits also lesson plans and 2 posters featuring the water cycle and US aquifers. Kits are available to ship within the US for $50 each.
As we gear up for another school year, let’s continue to teach our children about the importance of protecting our drinking water and inspire the next generation of water professionals!
Note: this video shows examples of the Awesome Aquifer 360. It is not the actual digital product.
