On March 17, 1943 the Geist Reservoir was officially placed into service after winter and spring snow melts filled the reservoir to its capacity. Originally built to be a source of drinking water during periods of drought and low stream flow, the reservoir, which turns 80 this year, continues to be a major source of drinking water for Marion County.
As popularity of the reservoir for recreational use increased from the 1950’s and on, so has the need to maintain the ecosystem and preserve water quality. Invasive vegetation and excessive silt contribute to some of today’s problems on the reservoir, but local groups such as the Geist Reservoir Conservancy District continue to educate the community and visitors to preserve and protect the reservoir.
If you live on or around the Geist, you can take simple steps to help aquatic life and protect drinking water even before it reaches the treatment plant.
- Decrease use of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers that may end up in the lake
- Properly dispose of household chemicals and pet waste
- Keep ashes and lawn debris away from lake
Check out this guide from the Geist Conversancy District for more details on pollution prevention near the reservoir.
