Last Saturday the Marion County Wellfield Education Corporation (MCWEC) participated in the annual Earth Day Indiana festival at Garfield Park.
Our live drinking water contamination model was a crowd favorite! Teachers, environmental professionals, kids, and city employees stopped by to see how far the ‘contamination’ had traveled as the festival continued. The contamination model is a great teaching tool for kids – not only to understand groundwater contamination, but to talk about where our drinking water comes from and why we should work to keep it clean.
In addition to our live drinking water contamination model, many stopped by to understand more about wellfields and check whether their business, home, or small farm is located in one.
Another of our favorite parts of Earth Day Indiana is talking with the public about disposing of household hazardous waste and the city of Indianapolis’ free ToxDrop. Kudos to our citizens who are really working hard! We met some potters who wanted to know about disposing of their waste, homeowners who had extra oil, and even a property manager who was interested in helping his tenants keep their properties free of waste.
Shout out to MCWEC board member Joe Merrick who joined the fun and the organizers of Earth Day Indiana for a great crowd on a hot June day.
