The new Citizens Reservoir – which until a few years ago was an old rock quarry – is prepared to pump water into the Geist Reservoir as Indiana experiences another drought this summer.
Located on Olio Road, Citizens Energy purchased the land and created this 230 feet deep backup reservoir which holds over 3 billion gallons of water. Pumps transport water into the Geist Reservoir, keeping water flowing into the Citizens Fall Creek and White River water treatment plants when drinking water supply in Marion County is low. During dry periods like these, water can be pumped at a rate of 30 million gallons per day from the Citizens Reservoir into the Geist Reservoir. An intake structure allows excess water in the Geist Reservoir that may accumulate at other times of the year to flow back into the Citizens Reservoir for future storage.
The new reservoir was built as an additional surface water supply not only to help in times of drought, but to support continued economic development and growth. According to the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, the demand for water in Central Indiana will increase by 50 million gallons per day by 2050.
While businesses and homeowners can’t control rainfall, we can all do our part this summer and as we look to the future by conserving water and keeping contamination out of our surface and groundwater supplies.
