In early June, MCWEC board members Dr. Rachel Walker and Joe Merrick plus several team members of Mundell & Associates chatted with participants at the Earth Day Indiana Festival about drinking water protection in central Indiana.
Participants learned from a table-top groundwater model (as well as the Awesome Aquifer kit) how pollution does not just stay in one spot, but can travels underground through aquifers. Kids were especially interested in watching the colored water enter the model and some came back later to see how far it traveled based on geology and soil type of where the “spill” occurred.
Many visitors to the MCWEC booth expressed interest in Indy ToxDrop – the free household hazardous waste collection events held on Saturdays throughout the city. They hoped to take products such as leftover paint and old spray fertilizer to help keep these cans from being forgotten and accidentally end up in the trash or water supply.
Additionally, we displayed some spill kit equipment and spoke about the free and confidential business operations assessments MCWEC provides to any business (large or small) located in a Marion County Wellfield who is in need of assistance following drinking water protection regulations.
Rachel and the others enjoyed speaking with many interested community members as well as employees from the city utilities and Indiana Department of Environmental Management who stopped by to say hi!
