Families from all over central Indiana gathered at this year’s Earth Day festival on June 5 for a sunny day of activities focused on environmental topics such as recycling, conservation of natural resources and sustainable living.
Rachel Walker of Mundell & Associates represented the Marion County Wellfield Education Corporation with a booth full of fun activities and earth-friendly giveaways. The biggest hit of the day was the 3D groundwater model which demonstrates how contaminated plumes move in relation to different types of geology. Participants could come back throughout the day to see how far the different contaminants had moved through underground layers of the earth. Rachel used different colored water to represent each contaminant.
Behind the table, MCWEC showcased 2 new stand up banners that detailed ways in which residents and businesses can protect against potential threats to groundwater. In addition to talking with people who stopped by the table about MCWEC’s free and confidential businesses assessments, Rachel also shared the importance of educating on-site employees at high risk contamination sites such as gas stations to know and understand what to do in case of a spill or leak.
Overall it was a fun day out in our community, sharing the importance of how each one of us can protect our groundwater!
