Find Safer Choices to Use for Your Business

February 9, 2021

For the past 15 years the EPA has administered a product safety program now known as “Safer Choice” through the Pollution Prevent (P2) Program.

Companies can voluntarily certify products to receive the Safer Choice label – from household cleaners to business grease trap / lift station maintainers or septic system treatments. This certification not only ensures ingredients in the product meets the Safer Choice Standard, but that the pH, packaging and more of the product is safe for you, your family, animals, workers’ health and the environment.

Through this program, EPA reviews all chemical ingredients, regardless of their percentage in the product. Every ingredient must meet strict safety criteria for both human health and the environment, including carcinogenicity, reproductive/developmental toxicity, toxicity to aquatic life, and persistence in the environment.

Safer Choice not only reviews safety, but each product must also pass must pass category-specific performance standards to perform comparably to conventional products.

Once a product meets the Safer Choice Standard, EPA conducts annual audits to ensure our standards continue to be met. Learn more about the criteria and chemicals.

Choosing a Safer Choice product is one way to keep toxic chemicals out of our groundwater – find a safer choice for use in your home or business via the interactive Safer Choice website!
