Tips for Filling Out Your Spill Plan (Part 1 – Contacts and Location)

May 28, 2019

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4

One of the requirements for many businesses located in Marion County wellfields is to have an Emergency Response and Spill Prevention Plan. The Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD) provides a spill plan template which is available here. This fillable pdf template is a short four page plan that allows most businesses to produce a straightforward spill plan that is easy to write and use. Over the next four blog posts, we will cover each page of the MCPHD Spill Plan template and provide tips for filling it out and producing a spill plan that works for your business.

Page 1: The top of the front page of the template is straightforward and has lines that can be filled in to provide basic information about the business such as name, address, and contact phone numbers for the business owner. There is also a line for Emergency Contact Person – this may be an employee who is in charge of emergency and spill procedures, or for smaller businesses, it may be the business owner or manager.

A list of emergency contact numbers is provided in the middle of the front page, including numbers for Poison Control, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, Indianapolis Department of Public Works, local utilities and more. This list is meant to provide quick access to essential numbers to call in the event of an emergency or spill, without having to spend time looking them up.

The lower section of the front page has space for listing the name, address and phone numbers of the nearest medical center to your business. This information can be easily looked up on Google.

Last but not least is a spot for providing the location and a map of where the Emergency Spill Kit is located at your business. The map does not have to be fancy or complicated – a simple outline of your building with an ‘X marks the spot’ for where the spill kits are located will work just fine. What is important is that the description and map make sense to you and your employees so the spill kits can be found quickly and efficiently.
