MCWEC presented at the Groundwater Foundations 2017 Conference in beautiful Boise, Idaho! We discussed the multiple ways groundwater is protected in Marion County for the good of all water users. Christopher Barnett from the Lawrence Community Development Corporation and Pam Thevenow from the Marion County Public Health Department represented the MCWEC Board while John Mundell and Haley Waldkoetter from Mundell & Associates represented MCWEC’s environmental consultant.
Our presentation gave a brief introduction to Marion County and Indianapolis and how our public water supply works with details about each of our seven wellfields. We then covered how groundwater protection efforts have evolved in the past 20 years. We’ve moved from purely voluntary efforts, to including regulation of new development, to now regulating all business through the use of a health code. Indianapolis was one of the first Groundwater Guardian Communities and one of the great parts of the conference is getting a chance to see how other governments, businesses, and non-profit organizations are improving the health of groundwater in their regions.
