Yesterday we had the opportunity to walk-through four auto repair business in the Riverside wellfield. We learned more about each business and their operations.
During a site visit at an auto repair business we look for several things, most importantly, where waste and other liquids are stored. The kinds of chemicals we are looking for are oil, gasoline, cleaners, and coolant. We want to see all of these chemicals stored indoors in sturdy containers that are either double-walled or that have secondary containment around them (such as a drum secondary containment pallet or a berm among other options).
Next, we look at the condition of floors and pavement. If there are cracks in the floor, or the floor isn’t sealed, chemicals can use that as a path into groundwater! We know repairing and resealing floors can be expensive, but it is really important! In some cases, using a shallow metal tray under the vehicles being repaired and then disposing of any liquids that drip on that can be enough.
We are also able to provide technical support on some environmental and waste disposal issues (please contact us if you would like assistance!).
This summer, and at other times during the year, we have Spanish speakers available to talk businesses that would prefer communication in Spanish. If you would be interested in a Spanish assessment, contact us via our form or telephone (317-630-9060).
The groundwater under your business is the drinking water for Indianapolis, so let’s work together to keep it clean!
